Rodgers Hunts History, Bucs Pray Daniels Can Hold the Line
A banged-up Tampa Bay side leans on an undrafted rookie QB against a Steelers offense finding its groove
Rookie vs. legend. That's the story hiding inside this Week 6 matchup at Raymond James Stadium. The 3-2 Pittsburgh Steelers roll into Tampa as 2.5-point road favorites against a 1-4 Buccaneers team that finally snapped its losing skid in Dallas on Thursday night — and then watched head coach Todd Bowles confirm what everyone already suspected: Baker Mayfield, still nursing a dislocated right thumb, won't play. Undrafted free agent rookie Jalon Daniels gets the call for the third time this season. His opponent? Aaron Rodgers, two touchdown passes away from tying Peyton Manning for third on the all-time list. This is not a fair fight on paper.
Let's be real about what Tampa is walking into. Rodgers has thrown three touchdown passes in three straight games, sitting at 1,234 yards and 10 touchdowns through five weeks with an 88.9 passer rating. Mike McCarthy's offense averages 22.2 points per game against Tampa's 20.0. And then there's the pass rush. T.J. Watt carries the fastest recorded get-off of any edge rusher in the league at 0.71 seconds, has racked up 4.5 sacks, and is going up against right tackle Luke Goedeke — a matchup the Buccaneers' own film sessions have highlighted all week. Alex Highsmith adds another 3.0 sacks to that equation. Watt and Highsmith alone account for 7.5 of Pittsburgh's 11 sacks on the season. The injury report tells its own story: the Bucs secondary will be without safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (fractured rib), cornerback Benjamin Morrison is doubtful with a quad injury, and linebacker SirVocea Dennis is questionable. For a defense already carrying a 615-yard passing output from Daniels this season, that is a brutal combination of absences against a Pittsburgh offense with DK Metcalf — a physical freak who wins at the catch point — plus Pat Freiermuth emerging as Rodgers' most reliable check-down and intermediate threat. Even with Metcalf listed as questionable with an illness and a rough 12-yard performance last week, rookie Germie Bernard has quietly stepped up as the No. 2 option, out-targeting Metcalf 9-4 in Week 5 with Michael Pittman Jr. on IR and Roman Wilson also out for multiple weeks.
Here's where it gets interesting, though. This game has some genuine landmines for Pittsburgh. The Steelers are 1-8 on the road following a win over their last nine tries — and they're coming off a 34-22 victory over Indianapolis. The Bucs blitz at the third-highest rate in the league, and Rodgers has been atrocious against the blitz this season, posting a league-low minus-0.53 EPA per dropback when pressured. His accuracy numbers on throws of 10-plus yards are dead last in the league. Tampa's defense has held opposing quarterbacks to the ninth-fewest fantasy football points per game, and the Bucs averaged 6.4 yards per play in their win over Dallas — proof there's life in this offense when Daniels manages the game and Chris Godwin runs disciplined routes. The O/U sits at 39.5, which tells you Vegas doesn't expect a fireworks show. For good reason. Jaylen Warren has been the backbone of Pittsburgh's ground game with 410 rushing yards and Rico Dowdle trending toward active after logging his first full practice of the week, but Tampa has been significantly tougher against the run than the pass. Expect the Steelers to lean on Rodgers' short and intermediate game, let Freiermuth work the seams, and manage this one carefully. Pittsburgh isn't built to put up 35 right now — the receiver room is too thin.
Still, the gap in quarterback play here is enormous. Daniels went undrafted for a reason. Asking him to beat a Steelers defense anchored by Cameron Heyward, Watt, and Highsmith — even with this many Tampa skill players on the field — is asking a lot. The Buccaneers have lost their last five games against opponents with a winning record, and Pittsburgh's 3-2 mark puts them squarely in that category. Daniels making history as the first undrafted rookie QB to beat the Steelers since Warren Moon in 1984 would be a tremendous clean sheet achievement for this Bucs team and a genuine shock to the system. I don't see it happening. Pittsburgh's pass rush creates a goal in the first quarter, Rodgers leans on Freiermuth and Warren underneath, and the Bucs simply don't have enough firepower from the penalty-drawing rookie to keep pace. Pittsburgh wins this one on the road, ugly but efficient.
Prediction: Pittsburgh Steelers 23, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 13
