Paris vs Monaco: Ligue 1's Tightest Race Hits Matchweek 9

Two sides separated by a point meet in a Ligue 1 clash neither can afford to lose

Paris v Monaco

Three goals, two assists, three appearances. If you want to understand why Paris are still in this Ligue 1 title conversation despite a bumpy run of results, just look at what L. Sinayoko has done in his limited time on the pitch. The striker is among the division's top scorers alongside the likes of Rennes' E. Lepaul and Lens' F. Thauvin, and on Sunday afternoon he'll be the man Monaco's backline will be most desperate to contain.

Here's the thing about Paris's recent form, though — it's been all over the place. Three wins, a draw, and two losses from their last six, with 10 goals scored and 9 conceded. That's not the defensive solidity you'd want heading into a game like this. They beat Rennes 4-3 in what was clearly a chaotic affair, then went to Lorient and lost 1-0, and before that Lens put two past them to win 2-1. K. Trapp has made 10 saves in three appearances and kept two clean sheets, which tells you the goalkeeper has been busy. Losing J. Ikoné and L. Koleosho to dead leg injuries on the wings hurts their attacking options, and N. Sangui's muscle injury at left back creates another gap to fill on Sunday. The supporting cast will need to step up — I. Kebbal has nine key passes in three games to go with his two assists, and A. Camara and P. Lees-Melou have been quietly important across 275 minutes each in the middle of the park.

Monaco arrive with their own headaches. Two wins, three draws and a loss across their last six, scoring 8 and conceding 7 — not exactly the form of a team steamrolling Ligue 1. They drew 2-2 with Toulouse, shared a 1-1 with LOSC Lille, and fell to the same Lorient side that beat Paris. The standout concern is the injury list: Ansu Fati, who carries a hamstring injury with a return date not until December 2026, and S. Idumbo-Muzambo, also out with a hamstring problem, are both missing. Losing your creative midfielder mid-campaign is the kind of blow that can derail a season. Paris Josua Brunner leads Monaco's attacking threat with two goals in three appearances, and Flávio Nazinho has chipped in from centre-back with a goal and an assist — you don't often see that kind of contribution from a defender, and it speaks to how Monaco like to build from the back. A. Golovin's two assists from the attacking midfield role made him dangerous, but his availability for Sunday needs watching given the squad's injury situation.

This is genuinely difficult to call — and I say that as someone who rarely sits on the fence. Both sides are conceding too freely, both carry threat going forward, and both have injury absentees who would otherwise start. But Paris are at home, Sinayoko is in the kind of form that wins football matches at any level from the Premier League down to Ligue 1's tightest midtable battles, and Monaco's draw-heavy recent record suggests they're more likely to settle for a point than go hunting for three. Give me Paris to edge it.
