Nice and Metz Share Points in Relegation Battle Stalemate

Sunday evening's clash at the Allianz Riviera was always going to be tense, with both Nice and Metz desperately needing points in their fight against relegation. What we got was a cagey affair that ended 0-0, leaving 16th-placed Nice still just five points clear of the drop zone and 18th-placed Metz still in serious trouble on just 17 points.

The match started cautiously, with both sides clearly aware of what was at stake. Nice looked the more likely to break the deadlock in the opening exchanges, registering 22 shots compared to Metz's 16, though both keepers were only called into action four times each. The best chance of the first half fell to Nice, but they couldn't convert their 1.50 expected goals into actual strikes.

The only real flashpoint before the break came in the 35th minute when Nice's Elye Wahi picked up a yellow card for a rash challenge. Manager decisions at halftime saw Nice make two early substitutions, bringing on K. Boudache and C. Vanhoutte to try and inject some fresh energy into their attack.

The second half continued in much the same vein, with Nice enjoying slightly more possession (49% vs 51%) but neither side able to find the crucial breakthrough. Metz responded with their own tactical tweaks on 65 minutes, introducing B. Stambouli and B. Munongo. The game became increasingly fractious as frustration grew, with yellow cards shown to Metz's B. Traore in the 73rd minute and Nice's K. Peprah just two minutes later.

Both managers used all their substitutions in the final quarter, desperately searching for a winner, but the defenses held firm. Nice's attacking threat was blunted by a lengthy injury list that included key players like Sepe Elye Wahi and Mohamed-Ali Cho, while Metz were missing several important figures including Joseph Mangondo and Giorgi Tsitaishvili.

Sofiane Diop was Nice's standout performer with a SAM rating of 8.5, orchestrating much of their attacking play from his central role. For Metz, left-winger Gauthier Hein impressed with an 8.2 SAM rating, providing their main creative outlet on a difficult evening.

This result extends Nice's winless run to five games (DLDDD) and keeps them precariously placed above the relegation zone. For Metz, it's a point gained rather than two lost, but with just eight games remaining, they desperately need to start converting draws into wins if they're to avoid the drop to Ligue 2.
