Lecce vs Juventus: Juve's Injury Crisis Hands Lecce a Lifeline
Juventus arrive at matchweek 8 battered and inconsistent — but Lecce's own troubles run deep
Six players unavailable. That's the situation Juventus carry into Sunday's Serie A matchweek 8 fixture against Lecce, and it's not exactly a minor headache. K. Yıldız, Francisco Conceição, M. Locatelli, A. Milik, J. Ekhator and Z. Çelik all miss out, stripping Juventus of genuine creativity and firepower across the pitch. Conceição had registered 6 key passes in just 145 minutes before his shoulder injury, and Locatelli contributed 5 key passes and an assist from midfield. Those aren't players you simply replace with a shrug. Juventus have scored 8 and conceded 8 in their last 6 matches, a perfectly balanced mediocrity that tells you this is a side searching for its identity right now, not one steamrolling the competition.
Here's the thing though — Lecce are hardly in a position to sit back and feast on Juventus's misfortune. They've won just 2 of their last 6, losing 4, and that goal record of 7 scored against 12 conceded doesn't inspire much confidence either. AC Milan dismantled them 3-0, and they followed that up with a 1-2 home defeat to Bologna. The one bright spot? A thumping 3-0 win away at Udinese, which showed Lecce can absolutely turn it on when the stars align. They also lose Tiago Gabriel and N. Štulić for this one on top of the injured midfield pair L. Coulibaly and I. Ilić, both nursing hamstring problems and both not expected back until November. Losing two central midfielders at once is brutal, and that's putting it mildly.
The head-to-head record offers Lecce little comfort either. Their only meeting in our records ended Lecce 0-1 Juventus back in May 2026, and for all the injury disruption in the away camp, Juventus still have T. Koopmeiners and Douglas Luiz available in midfield. Koopmeiners has chipped in with a goal already this season despite only clocking 20 minutes of football, while Bremer provides a genuine aerial threat from set pieces with his goal in 2 appearances. R. Kolo Muani leads the line and, while he hasn't found the net yet this season, he's been involved in 2 clean sheets over those 2 appearances, suggesting Juventus set up with real defensive structure even when they're misfiring going forward.
Lecce's best hope might come from W. Falcone, who has made 10 saves across his 2 appearances this season — he's clearly been kept busy. Olaf Gorter offers something from midfield with a goal to his name, and S. Pierotti has been generating chances on the right with 2 key passes. But without Coulibaly and Ilić pulling strings in the centre, the creative burden falls on a depleted group. Juventus's inconsistency is real and their injury list is significant, but their squad depth — 29 available players compared to Lecce's 24 — should still be enough to see them through a testing Sunday afternoon. Juventus to edge a tight, scrappy match.
