Lecce vs Genoa: Hosts Running on Empty

Two wins from six for Lecce, five unavailable players — Genoa arrive with genuine momentum

Lecce v Genoa

Two wins from six. Eight goals scored, fourteen conceded. That's the backdrop Lecce carry into Sunday's Serie A matchweek 10 home fixture against Genoa, and frankly, those numbers don't tell a flattering story. A 5-1 demolition at Frosinone and a 0-2 defeat at home to Juventus bookend a run that only briefly flickered to life with a 3-0 win at Udinese. The gulf between that result and the capitulation at Frosinone tells you everything about how inconsistent this Lecce side has been. Goals aren't coming easily and, let's be honest, they're not exactly keeping them out at the other end either.

The injury and suspension news makes things considerably worse for the hosts. Kialonda Gaspar is suspended after a red card and won't be available, which is a meaningful blow to a backline that's already shipped 14 in six matches. L. Coulibaly is out with a hamstring muscle injury, I. Ilić is gone until March 2027 with a tendon rupture, S. Pierotti is sidelined with a broken ankle until January, and W. Geubbels is also absent with adductor pain. Five players unavailable. That's a squad stretched thin heading into a match they badly need something from. Tiago Gabriel and Olaf Gorter have both contributed a goal each from just two appearances in our records, and W. Falcone has made 10 saves across those two outings — which tells its own story about how much work the goalkeeper has been put through. M. Frendrup has accumulated 3 key passes from two appearances and B. Norton-Cuffy has racked up 4 key passes at right wing-back, making him one of the more active creators in Genoa's setup. They've arrived here in form.

Genoa, you'd be forgiven for thinking, are just another mid-table Serie A side grinding through a season. But look at their last six results: three wins, a draw, and only two defeats, with 7 scored and 6 conceded. They beat Juventus 2-0 at home. They beat Venezia 1-0. Yes, they lost 2-0 to Roma, but the overall picture is a team that has found something in recent weeks. M. Ellertsson misses out with an ankle sprain and Cody Drameh is absent with muscular problems, but with 33 players available, Genoa's depth is not a concern in the way Lecce's clearly is right now.

The one previous meeting between these two that we hold ended 1-0 to Lecce back in May 2026, so there's at least a sliver of recent head-to-head encouragement for the home side. But context matters, and right now context is working firmly against Lecce. Genoa are the better-organised, better-staffed and better-performing side going into this one, and that should tell on Sunday afternoon. Genoa to take the points.
