Le Mans vs Monaco: Can Mafouta Shock the Principality?

Le Mans host Monaco on Sunday with a striker on fire — but the visitors' defence tells a different story

Le Mans v Monaco

Three goals in two appearances. L. Mafouta is sitting alongside the likes of Lens's F. Thauvin and Monaco's own Paris Josua Brunner as one of Ligue 1's most productive forwards this season, and on Sunday afternoon he might be the only reason Le Mans have anything to cling to in this matchweek 10 clash. The problem is, one brilliant striker can only do so much when the team around him has conceded 12 goals in their last six matches.

Let's be honest about where Le Mans are right now. One win, two draws, and three losses in their most recent six outings, scoring just six and leaking a dozen. Troyes put two past them without reply. Toulouse came to their own ground and left with a 3-0 win. The only recent result that showed any fight was a 1-1 draw at Auxerre. D. Guèye has chipped in with a goal from his two appearances, and L. Calodat has picked up an assist, but the creative burden without the injured A. Bourabaa — who is out until January 2027 following ankle surgery — falls heavily on a midfield that hasn't exactly been generating chances. N. Kocik has made nine saves across two appearances in goal, which tells you a lot about the pressure this backline is regularly under. For fantasy football purposes, Mafouta is the obvious Le Mans selection, but picking defenders from this squad feels like a gamble.

Monaco, meanwhile, are no world-beaters themselves. One win, three draws and two losses in their last six, with nine conceded against seven scored. Paris beat them 3-1. Lorient took all three points with a 1-0 win. These are not the results of a side oozing confidence. But here's the thing — their defensive structure has shown genuine resilience when it clicks. L. Hrádecký has two clean sheets from four appearances and 21 saves. Flávio Nazinho has contributed a goal and an assist from centre-back while racking up five key passes, and E. Dier has also managed a goal and an assist from the same position — the kind of ball-playing defender that any champions league-aspiring side needs at the back. L. Camara in the holding role has five key passes of his own across four appearances, quietly pulling strings without getting on the scoresheet. The loss of both Ansu Fati and S. Idumbo-Muzambo to hamstring injuries hurts Monaco's options in the final and middle third, but their defensive foundations still look considerably more solid than Le Mans's.

This is a Ligue 1 fixture between two sides who are struggling to find consistency, but the gap in their recent records is real. Le Mans are conceding at a rate that would worry any coach in the football calendar, and Monaco, despite their own wobbles, have the individual quality — Brunner's two goals, Golovin's creative output — to punish a leaky home defence. The visitors should edge this one.
