Getafe vs Rayo: Monday Night Misery or a Turning Point?

Two La Liga sides with identical points but very different problems meet in matchweek 9

Getafe v Rayo Vallecano

Three goals scored in six matches. One win. That is where Getafe find themselves heading into Monday night's La Liga matchweek 9 fixture against Rayo Vallecano, and you'd be forgiven for thinking this is a side running out of ideas going forward. They've conceded seven in that same stretch, shipped a 3-0 to Barcelona without reply, and only managed to keep Rayo Vallecano out of the equation last time by beating Málaga 1-0. The hosts come into this one knowing that another defeat leaves them in genuinely uncomfortable territory.

Rayo, though, are hardly rolling into town full of confidence either. Here's the thing about their recent form — two wins, two draws and two losses in their last six, with 10 goals scored and 14 conceded. That defensive record is alarming, and Real Madrid put four past them without breaking much sweat in what was a reality-check result. Even their wins have come at a cost, with Sergio Camello doing the heavy lifting up front. The striker scored both goals in Rayo's 2-1 victory over Espanyol in just 75 minutes of action, making him one of La Liga's joint top scorers alongside Raphinha and the inevitable Kylian Mbappé. Two goals in one appearance tells you exactly where Rayo's goal threat is concentrated.

With Adrià Pedrosa unavailable for Rayo alongside goalkeeper A. Batalla — out with a lower leg fracture — and Luiz Felipe facing a cruciate ligament injury that rules him out until the summer of 2027, the visitors carry genuine defensive concerns into this one. Dani Cárdenas made five saves in his one appearance in goal, which gives you some idea of the workload behind that defence. Álvaro García and Unai López both picked up assists from the midfield in that Espanyol win, which shows there is creativity beyond just Camello, but the clean sheet column for Rayo this season makes grim reading. For Getafe, Juanmi's knee injury is a blow up top, and the attacking statistics from our records — nil goals, nil assists across the board from their outfield players — paint a stark picture of a side struggling to hurt anyone.

The head-to-head does Getafe no favours. Their last meeting ended Getafe 0-2 Rayo Vallecano back in May, and across our records, Rayo hold the bragging rights in this fixture. Both clubs sit on 8 points from their respective matches played, but neither is playing football that would trouble the better sides in this division. Monday night feels like the kind of match that could grind out a goal from nothing, probably from the one player in form across both squads. Camello is the danger man, Rayo's defence is porous enough to give Getafe a chance, but right now Getafe's attack hasn't given us any reason to believe they can take it. Rayo to edge a tight one.
