Elche vs Betis: Sunday's La Liga Clash Has an Edge to It
Matchweek 12 brings a Betis side in fine fettle to an Elche outfit that knows they need something
Seven wins from eleven La Liga matches is not a fluke. Real Betis have been one of the more convincing sides in the division this season, and they carry 23 points, a positive goal difference of plus three, and a recent 2-1 win over Málaga into Sunday's matchweek 12 trip to Elche. The problems, though, are real. C. Hernández is out with a calf injury not expected to clear until late November, and F. Bernal serves a suspension after picking up a red card. That is your starting striker and a central midfielder both gone at once, and you cannot just paper over that kind of gap.
Betis have still been dangerous in behind, mind you. Rodrigo Riquelme has a goal in two appearances from the left wing, Isco has racked up four key passes across two games in central midfield, and Pablo Fornals has chipped in with three key passes from his deeper role. Marc Bartra even contributed a goal from centre-back. The issue is not creativity — Fran García has an assist from left-back, Marc Roca registered one from the holding position — it is who leads the line now that the main centre-forward is unavailable. That is a genuinely open question going into this football match.
Elche, let's be honest, have had a rough time of it. Their season record reads two wins, four draws and five losses from eleven games, 14 goals scored and 18 conceded, and a goal difference of minus four tells you where the main problems lie. The 0-1 home defeat to Valencia stings, though they did put three past Rayo Vallecano and held Villarreal to a goalless draw in their recent run of form. They are without Marc Aguado in central midfield through an ankle sprain and T. Lemar is also unavailable, which thins the creative options considerably. Fer Niño and Buba Sangaré have both scored in this La Liga campaign, and David Affengruber has been a steady presence at the back across six appearances with three clean sheets to his name. Those are the building blocks they have to work with.
The only previous meeting we hold ended Real Betis 2-1 Elche back in May, and Betis's depth even without their suspended midfielder and injured striker puts them in a stronger position across this matchup. Elche have shown they can nick results — that 3-0 at Rayo proves they have an attacking threat when things click — but their defensive numbers over the season are a concern against a Betis side with the creativity of Isco, Riquelme and Fornals all available. Sunday's fixture in La Liga feels like one Betis ought to control, even if they have to find a different way to score.
